The CFA Society Sri Lanka is set to host the Ninth Annual CFA Capital Market Awards on June 29, 2022 at the Oak Room, Cinnamon Grand Colombo, themed “The Blockchain Revolution in Sri Lanka’s Capital Market”. The Capital Market Awards are a flagship event on the CFA Society Sri Lanka calendar and are among the most sought after accolades recognizing and rewarding excellence in the local financial markets.
The theme of this year’s event relating to the regulation of blockchain and in particular the use of cryptocurrencies, serves to highlight the importance of adopting new technologies for market growth and evolution, as well as to support the recovery of the local economy.
While the global market capitalization of cryptocurrencies exceeded $5 trillion this year, unlike the traditional banking sector, some jurisdictions are more advanced in defining regulatory approaches to the digital asset industry. As the digital asset industry evolves, the legal and regulatory landscape must necessarily evolve.
In this context, in October 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers of Sri Lanka approved the establishment of a committee to study the feasibility of blockchain-related initiatives. Subsequently, in December 2021, local media reported that the port city of Colombo would allow cryptocurrency trading, with conditions.
It was also reported in June 2022 that a local DocuSign integrator would launch Sri Lanka’s first regulated crypto exchange in the port city of Colombo over a 3-month period, after contacting the Sri Lanka Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC ) and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to formulate a regulatory framework.
As Sri Lanka has recently diversified into crypto payments, NFT auctions and crypto investments, the CFA Society Sri Lanka is of the view that there needs to be a conversation about how to regulate the markets and how which industry players can work with regulators.
So this year’s CFA Capital Market Awards will feature Gabriella Kusz – CEO of the Global Digital Asset & Cryptocurrency Association (DCA) and Vice Chair of the Government Blockchain Association (GBA) Regulators Working Group – as keynote speaker.
